MobyMax is designed to recognize and accept a variety of valid fraction and decimal formats. Students have the flexibility to input answers in different—but mathematically equivalent—forms, unless the problem specifically requires a certain format.

Accepted Fraction and Decimal Formats

Unless a specific format is required, MobyMax will mark equivalent answers as correct. For example, all of the following inputs would be accepted for an answer of ½:

  • 1/2

  • .5

  • .5000000

  • 4/8

This flexibility allows students to demonstrate understanding in the way that feels most natural to them.

Entering Mixed Numbers

When entering mixed numbers, students must separate the whole number from the fraction with a space:

  • Correct: 1 1/3 (interpreted as one and one-third)

  • Incorrect: 11/3 (interpreted as eleven-thirds, an improper fraction)

This small but important step helps prevent input errors and ensures the student's response is interpreted correctly.

Best Practices for Students

  • Read each question carefully—some problems may specifically ask for a fraction, decimal, or simplified form.

  • Use a space between the whole number and fraction for mixed numbers.

  • Avoid using symbols or formatting not supported by the MobyMax answer field (e.g., do not use special characters or superscripts).
